NOTRE DAME STUDENTS TAKE A STAND

A small group of passionate Notre Dame College students sacrificed up to four days of learning to attend the Oz Green Youth Changing the World Climate Congress in Shepparton last week.

Six of the students – Cidra Chkhaydem, Anna Rowland, Heidi Vanderspek, Grace Lewin, Anahat Dhaliwal and our sustainability leader Piper Canning – spent two days completing facilitation training for the event before being joined by five other students – Nessie Le, Katie Hamilton, William Beresford-Murray, Aleena Chkhaydem and Jodie Rutten – for the two days of the Congress.

At the congress, coordinated by the international sustainability champion Oz Green, the students were able to learn about the many challenges facing our climate, but also to draw inspiration from working collectively to design action plans for initiatives they hope can make a difference to sustainability both within our school and the broader community.

While Notre Dame was the only school represented at an event open to all secondary schools, the students are keen to share their learnings with fellow young people throughout Shepparton.

Students or teachers from other schools in the Shepparton region are more than welcome to make themselves known to our Notre Dame sustainability leader Phil Guthrie to start the process of building bridges between young people in Shepparton and beyond with a passion for protecting our environment.

School Production - The Drowsy Chaperone

Not long now until our wonderful production of The Drowsy Chaperone hits the theatre next month.

Join Man in Chair as he transports the audience into a buzzing 1920's Broadway musical comedy, following along the shenanigans of the actors, story and music.

This dazzling show is supported by a bright and talented student cast and we cannot wait to see them all shine on stage.

Swimming Sports Victoria - Team Vic

Kiera Shaw and Stephie Moran, I'm sure you've heard of them...because when it comes to swimming, these two absolutely dominate!

So it comes as no surprise that Kiera and Stephie will be heading to the Gold Coast in July, representing Victoria to compete in the School Sports Swimming Competition. "There are 5 or 6 swimmers in the girls 16-year age group. To be selected for Team Vic you must meet certain qualifying times. These times are different for each age group and event. In each event, the two fastest swimmers in Victoria get selected to compete for Team Vic" - Kiera

To achieve times, swimmers compete in various competitions such as Nationals, States, Countries and local meets. In order to maintain their fitness, the pair have been training hard and spending many hours in the pool and will continue to as the event draws closer. "Leading up to the event, training will be increased and harder, once we're on the Gold Coast we will have to train before the event and possibly during as well".

Congratulations Kiera and Stephie, you have done us proud already and we know all that hard work will pay off. All the very best for the competition.

Kiera and Steph

Reconciliation Week

This years' theme 'NOW MORE THAN EVER'.

Australia's reconciliation journey has had its many challenges, but these moments offer us an opportunity to come together and continue the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Yesterday, the College gathered for our Reconciliation Assembly. A time to connect and explore ways in which we as a community can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

Thank you to everyone who was involved in making this a very special Assembly.

Africa Day

Last Friday some of our lovely students attended the Africa Day celebration which took place at Greater Shepparton Secondary College. The Africa Day celebration is a significant moment for Africans around the world to celebrate the uniqueness of Africa as a continent through educational activities, music, dance, fashion and delicious food.

This event presented a great opportunity for all students to positively engage in numerous activities facilitated by Networking-African Australians focusing around cultural identity, team building and confidence.

Towards the end of the day, students and staff participated in the sound of Africa session brought to you by the African Star Dance and Drumming Company from Melbourne.

To conclude, the whole college community came together to help celebrate Africa day with style.
