This year, Notre Dame College proudly celebrates 40 years of providing Catholic education to the Greater Shepparton community. While the College as we know it began in 1984, its roots stretch back over 120 years to a tradition deeply embedded in faith, community, and a commitment to excellence.
“One of the absolute joys of being the Principal of Notre Dame College (a school where I completed my HSC (Form 5 and Form 6 in 1974/5) is hearing so many Sheppartonians talk so passionately about their connections to Notre Dame College (either as an ex-student or as a parents of students). Notre Dame College is so much part of the DNA for many families in the Greater Goulburn Valley and these people are so proud to talk about how Notre has shaped their lives in such a positive manner.
Likewise, I am so proud of being Principal of this magnificent College and will forever talk up the many wonderful aspects of Notre Dame College.” – Principal, John Cortese.
A History of Two Foundations
Notre Dame College’s story begins with two pioneering institutions. In February 1902, the Sisters of Mercy established Sacred Heart College, a Catholic secondary school for girls. Almost 50 years later, in 1951, the Marist Brothers opened St Colman’s College, a boys-only school designed to address the unique educational needs of young men.
While operating separately, both schools shared a common mission: to provide a Catholic education that nurtured the spiritual, academic, and personal growth of Shepparton’s youth. Over the years, they collaborated on various programs and events but maintained distinct administrations and funding structures.
The Path to Amalgamation
The idea of merging Sacred Heart and St Colman’s was discussed for many years, but not without resistance. However, in 1975, a significant step was taken when senior classes from both schools were combined. Despite initial challenges, this collaboration laid the groundwork for what would become a united Catholic education community.
In April 1983, the formal decision to amalgamate Sacred Heart and St Colman’s was announced, and in 1984, Notre Dame College officially opened its doors as a co-educational Catholic secondary school.
A Strong Start for a Bright Future
The newly formed Notre Dame College quickly established itself as a centre of academic and sporting excellence. With a broader curriculum and combined resources, students achieved outstanding academic results. The College also celebrated early sporting triumphs, including a memorable football victory in its inaugural year.
While the transition brought challenges, the union of Sacred Heart and St Colman’s proved overwhelmingly successful, creating a vibrant, faith-filled learning community that has flourished over the past four decades.
Honouring Our Legacy
As we celebrate this 40-year milestone, we honour the vision of the Sisters of Mercy and the Marist Brothers, whose dedication laid the foundation for Catholic education in Shepparton. We also acknowledge the countless staff, students, and families who have contributed to the Notre Dame College story, helping it grow into the thriving community it is today.
