Helping Keep Young People Safe Online

Thank you to all the parents and guardians who attended the information session with Senior Constable Mitchell Bull. The "Helping Keep Young People Safe Online" session focused on supporting our young people in the online world.

We understand that there were many in the community who were unable to attend on the evening.

We would like to share two resources that come highly recommended for parents:

Thinkyouknow.org – This site was created by the Australian Federal Police. Some of the materials in Mitch’s presentation came from this site.

Esafety.gov – This site was created by the eSafety Commissioner and is an independent regulator of online content in Australia.

We will continue to support our young people around online safety through our curriculum, guest speakers, and wellbeing conversations. We also aim to host similar information sessions for parents in 2024.

Luigi Gigliotti Scholarship Open to Year 12 Students

The Luigi Gigliotti Scholarship came into being after Notre Dame College was privileged to receive a grant of money from the Estate of a deceased member of our community, who had always held the College in high esteem.

The enduring legacy of invested monies will continue to generate funds for Year 12 student scholarships for tertiary study long into the future.

The intent of this Scholarship is to support students in regard to significant financial constraints that would prevent their family from being able to send their son/daughter to university, or who may face financial difficulty in being able to keep their son/daughter at university.

The Luigi Gigliotti Scholarship may be awarded to an applicant(s) after taking into consideration a range of the following criteria:

· Financial hardship

· Proficiency and application to studies

· Sport and community involvement

· Funds will be presented privately to successful applicant(s) upon receipt by the College of confirmation of the applicant’s enrolment into a university course

Scholarship Applications must be endorsed by the current Year 12 student’s Head of House and are to be handed into Student Reception at the College or directly to Mr. John Cortese by no later than

Friday 17 November, 2023.

Application forms are available for students to collect from Student Reception.

Summer Uniform

The uniform change over period is now over. This means all students are expected to be wearing their full and correct Summer uniform.

In particular, scarves are no longer permitted at all. Students who are wearing scarves will receive a uniform infringement and be required to place the item in their locker for the remainder of the day. In situations where students continue to wear their scarf, it may be confiscated.

Hats are also required to be worn during recess, lunchtime, and long PE lessons.

Celebrating Mother Mary Augustine Mungovan

To mark the 100th year of the passing of the Rev. Mother Mary Augustine Mungovan our Year 9 Mungovan House Leaders Ashton Mellington, Sophie Eade and Tamara Simpson together with former Mungovan Head of House and now Director of Year 9 Emmaus program David Cuzens and Year 9 Learning Community Leader Liz Taylor, attended a small ceremony and laid flowers at the Reverend Mothers gravesite. Director of Students Myra Hardy read details and reflected on her incredible life.

Born in Geelong in 1857, Teresa Mungovan, a brilliant and successful Teacher with the Victorian Education Department, joined the Sisters of Mercy in Bendigo in 1879.

She was Superior of Bendigo Community from 1898-1903. In 1899, she founded the branch house of Tatura and in 1902 accompanied five Sisters of Mercy to Shepparton to commence a new foundation. She returned to Shepparton in 1905 as Superior.

After the general amalgamation of the Sisters of Mercy Victoria in 1907, Mother Augustine joined the newly appointed Leadership Team at Ascot Vale and from there was re-appointed Superior of Bendigo in 1917. She was then appointed Superior of Shepparton in 1923 but died from a serious illness (believed to be appendicitis) before she commenced this term and was buried from St Brendan’s Shepparton on 16 January 1923. In each of these communities, Mother Augustine worked tirelessly for the growth and development of Catholic primary and secondary education. The College Chapel was named 'The Mother Augustine Mungovan Chapel' as part of the College’s Centenary Celebrations in 2002.

Notre Dame College further recognised Mother Mungovan’s contributions to education in Shepparton by naming one of their six houses Mungovan House in 2003.

Mercy Cup

In Term 3, Year 9 House Leaders attended the Seeds of Justice camp where they listened to an Afghan asylum seeker speak about his journey and experiences that many refugees have to face. Listening to his story inspired the leaders to raise awareness and support for the Ballarat Afghanistan Action Group (BAAG).

On every Friday of Term 4, a soccer match will be held, alternating competing students from the six school houses. This event has been called the Mercy Cup.

Students and staff are encouraged to watch the matches and purchase a sausage, veggie burger or chocolate to help raise funds for BAAG.

All proceeds from the food sales will go toward BAAG, with the hope that it will help to make the lives of refugees easier and more comfortable.
