Year 7 Blackout Poetry

Mrs. Brown's Year 7 English classes, JE1 and JE2, explored poetry through the creative medium of blackout poetry.

This unique approach not only adds a visual dimension to the written word but also encourages students to think differently about language and storytelling.

The students’ transformed existing texts through selective blacking out of words, giving them the opportunity to discover hidden meanings and explore alternative interpretations of the original text. The process of choosing specific words, and leaving them visible, allowed the students to play with words and create their own unique compositions.

The visual aspect of blackout poetry adds an extra layer of creativity and self-expression, making it an enjoyable and accessible way for students to connect with literature. It's not only about crafting meaningful verses, but also about designing visually striking work that convey both the intended message and a sense of artistic flair.

Congratulations to Notre Dame College’s Georgy Award Winners!

The 50th Annual Georgy Awards were held at Eastbank in Shepparton on Saturday 25 November. This prestigious ceremony recognises excellence in musical theatre and drama throughout North-Eastern Victoria and Southern New South Wales.

Many NDC students received Georgy nominations for our 2023 Theatre Studies plays and our production of Anastasia, and in total, there were eleven award winners on the night. This reflects the awesome talent we have at our College and the incredibly hard work contributed by our performers, their teachers and their supporters.

Highlights of the night included NDC winning two inaugural Georgy Awards. Our three student choreographers – Denni Bathman, Angela Baxter and Tayla Jenkins – won the inaugural Joyce
Baker-Dawber Award for Junior Choreography. This award is sponsored by the “godmother” of musical theatre in Shepparton, Joyce Baker-Dawber, who has been involved in the Georgy Awards since their inception in 1973. While this award is specifically for school students rather than staff, we also acknowledge the fourth member of our choreography team, our 2023 Performing Arts Trainee Tia Saddlier, who played a significant role in creating the show-stopping choreography for Anastasia.

The greatest highlight of the evening was winning the inaugural Junior Production of the Year for Anastasia. This award recognises the overall excellence of the production in all facets. Congratulations to our hardworking and successful production team, led by director Casey Fogarty and co-musical directors Neroli Cochrane and Tricia Baggs.

The full list of award winners is published below. Congratulations to all of you – we are so proud of you!
