An entry into the 2023 ANZAC Award resulted in a Certificate of Excellence being awarded to the College by the Federal Minister for Veterans Affairs & Defence Personnel - Matt Keogh.
The award recognises the College’s efforts in delving into Australia’s historical involvement in conflicts particularly the Vietnam War, and bringing to light personal veteran’s stories from the region.
The initiative was led by Director of Students Myra Hardy, who found the competition and saw it as a chance for both educational and local historical exploration. Mrs Hardy considered the competition to be a great opportunity for the College captains to know more about local history.
The project entailed creating a video that dove into Australia’s role in the Vietnam War.
The College interviewed Vietnam War veterans RSL President Bob Wilkie and Committee Member Stan Whitford about their personal war-time experiences. The video taught students about what the war was about the war and in particular, how it impacted individuals. Mr Wilke expressed his hope that the continuation of such narratives as the older generation of Veterans pass on.
Students involved said they have a new appreciation and understanding of the war’s personal and broader implications.
We currently have some restored relics on display in our Main Reception.
If you're calling into Notre Dame, please take the opportunity to see them for yourself.
On display are the original school bells from Sacred Heart College (1902) and St Colman’s College (1951) and the alter bell from the Mother Augustine Chapel (1902).
The roses are out at Flemington for the running of the 2023 Melbourne Cup Carnival, but so are the magnificent Roses of the Cross at Emmaus.
Thank you George the gardener at Emmaus for depicting the incredible blooming of our special cross
